Epilogue: Double
The Pleasure
Oh Baby News!!
Jack stepped behind her and crossed his arms over hers, enveloping her in
warmth. She turned in his arms, threading her hands behinds his head and gave him a tender kiss. Sue gave him a lingering
look, then reaches for his hand and places it over her stomach. She had meant to tell him last night, but they watched the
orange-red sunset together and got lost in each other’s eyes until the break of dawn.
Understanding spread over his face, he was awestruck; a new life, a new beginning.
Jack splayed his fingers over her stomach and marveled at the baby growing inside her. With a whoop, Jack scooped her into
his arms and whirled her around the room. He rained kisses on her forehead, eyes, cheek, mouth, everywhere he could touch
and last but not least one tiny kiss on her flat stomach.
Sue: Waking up beside you everyday and knowing that I’ll be back in your arms every night makes me very happy.
My life just keeps getting better because of you. What I’m trying to say, well you know, I’m crazy about you.
(radiant smile)
Jack: Well, that works both ways honey. I’m crazy about you too. (megawatt smile)
Sue: I’m glad. How do you feel about adding a new addition to the house? (curious smile)
Jack: What? Is that your polite way of saying you need more closet space in our bedroom? (megawatt smile, laughs,
and raise eyebrows)
Sue: That’s not a bad idea sweetheart. We’ll have to discuss it somewhere down the road. Actually, I
was thinking about adding a nursery. We’re going to need more space soon. (radiant smile and teases Jack)
Jack: Do you know something I don’t know? How soon are we talking about? (megawatt smile and raise eyebrows)
Sue: Yes. Have I told you yet how much I love you this morning? (radiant smile and teases Jack)
Jack: If you count body language, you told me clearly about an hour ago. (megawatt smile and his signature wink)
Sue: As I was saying, I love you more day after day, Jack. And I love our baby. (radiant smile)
Jack: You’re what? Are you saying what I think you’re saying? Are you…A baby? (megawatt smile and
his signature wink)
Sue: Yes. I’m pregnant. We’re going to have a baby, Jack. (radiant smile)
Jack: When? How? Well, I mean I know how it happened. Oh Sue, a baby! When is the baby due? How far along are you?
Tell me everything. How come you don’t look pregnant? (megawatt smile, laughs, happy tears, and his signature wink)
Sue: Springtime. We’ll know for sure the baby’s due date when I have my next checkup with my ob-gyn,
Dr. Laura Murphy. Right now, I’m about six weeks along. And yes, Dr. Murphy said I’ll be showing with my expanding
stomach by my fifth month. I had plan on telling you last night but you kissed me and I lost my train of thought. It happens
quite often when I’m around my husband. (radiant smile and teases Jack)
Jack: This is amazing. My life really does keep getting better. Wow! I’m going to be a father! We have to make
baby plans. I have to child-proof our house before our baby comes into this world. (megawatt smile and excitement)
Then he whirled
her around again until she buried her face against his neck. Jack backed up until he could collapse onto the couch with her
on his lap. His strong fingers trembled with anticipation as he gently settled his palm over the place where a new life has
started to grow and he kissed his wife passionately. A new little life, their child would have both a doting mommy and a hands-on,
down-to-earth daddy.
Sue: Jack, please put me down. I’m feeling slightly light-headed. And there’s the matter of morning sickness
to deal with also. (radiant smile)
Jack: I’m sorry. Is the baby okay? Are you okay? I shouldn’t have whirled you around. I’m an idiot.
I have to be more careful now that there’s going to be two of you to take care of. (concern smile)
Sue: I’m fine. Our baby is fine. And no, you’re not an idiot. A few words I’d use to describe you;
crazy, stubborn, adorable, lovable, temptation, and sweetest husband most of the time. (radiant smile and teases Jack)
Jack: Thanks I’ll take that as a compliment. You know, we have to start thinking of baby names. We’re
going to need to buy baby crib, toys, diapers, baby wipes, and so many other things. Would you rather hang wallpaper or paint
the nursery? (megawatt smile)
Sue: Whoa. Slow down, Jack. We have almost seven months before the baby comes to get everything in order. Are you
happy? I mean, we talked about starting a family but we also wanted time for just the two of us. Having a baby changes everything
now. Do you mind? (inquisitive smile)
Jack: I am so thrilled. Do I mind? My wife presents me with the ultimate gift of love and she asks me if I mind?
Oh Sue! I treasure you, and the happiness you’ve brought into my life. I’m going to cherish our baby and make
sure nobody hurts her or him ever. Our baby is going to have the best of everything. I promise you that. (megawatt smile)
Sue: Our baby already has the best of everything because he or she will have you as their father. All babies should
be so lucky. (radiant smile)
Jack: You’re right. Our baby already has the best of everything because he or she has you as their mother.
Boy or girl; doesn’t matter to me as long as our baby is healthy and happy. That is my greatest wish and my greatest
joy. (megawatt smile)
Sue: Me too. Would you rather have a girl or boy? You know, last night I had a dream about you teaching a little
boy how to hold a hockey stick and score the winning goal. (radiant smile)
Jack: I like that dream. Did I ever tell you about the dream I had about you and a little girl who looks just like
her mom running around our yard catching butterflies and picking flowers on a sunny spring day? (megawatt smile)
Sue: No, but it sure sounds nice. All I ever really needed is what I already have. You and our baby are the two most
important people in the whole wide world to me. (radiant smile)
Jack: I’m glad. Because all I need to make me happy are you and our precious baby. Now that you’re eating
for two, how much do I have to shell out for lunch? (megawatt smile and teases Sue)
