Chapter 11: Guardian Angel
Renee lives in Jack: Hi Renee. I brought chardonnay as a house-warming gift. You have a nice place.
(smile) Renee: Thanks Jack. I’m glad you came on short notice. I would like you to meet
my daughter, Grace. (smile) Jack: You didn’t tell me you had a daughter. (confused smile and raise eyebrows) Renee: I’m sure I mentioned it at the embassy party. (smile) Jack: Maybe you did. I just forgot. Jack thinking: I don’t think so. I wonder if Renee is hiding something from me. Hi there, Grace. It’s nice to meet you. (megawatt smile)Grace: It’s nice to meet you too. Mommy talks about you all the time. (smile) Renee: Grace, please go clean up your toys before dinner and wash your hands. Kids you never know what they
are going to say. (smile) Jack: How old is Grace? She is an adorable little girl. (megawatt smile) Renee: I think so too. Grace is 6 years old. She loves playing with her dolls and her dollhouse. Dinner will
be ready in a few minutes. So tell me what’s new with you since I saw you
at the embassy party? (smile) Jack: Not much. Busy at the bureau. Actually we were able to catch Alfonso Del Marco and dismantle his organization.
That is a huge win for the bureau. (megawatt smile) Renee: That’s fantastic. Oh, my pot roast is ready. Let’s go eat. (smile) Renee brings out her pot roast to the dining room. In an instant, her living room window is shattered by a hail of gunfire. The bullets start to fly in every direction. Jack turns to Renee and yells at her to “Get down. Stay put”. Renee is screaming for Grace. Just then Grace comes running into the room. Jack knows that she is in danger. He runs over to her and picks Grace up. Just as he is about to head back to where Renee is, he sees another round of bullets come crashing through the open window.
So Jack pushes her down on the floor. He crouches low on top of her and covers his body over hers. It was all over in less than two minutes; Renee and Grace are still crying. Jack squats up slowly to survey the scene before him. Now, Jack is half-crawling, half-sliding across the floor towards the master bedroom. He tells Renee and Grace to follow his lead. When he gets to the bedroom, he gives Renee instructions. Jack: Listen to me. I want you to pack whatever the two of you need for
a few days. You have five minutes to do this. Renee: What are you going to do? Jack: I am going to call my team. Then I am going to get you and Grace out
of here before whoever shot at you comes back to finish the job. Go now.
Jack
calls Bobby and tells him to get over to Monticello Garden Apartments. I’m in
Just then Bobby, Myles, Dimitrius, and ERT team show up. They are talking to Jack about what happened. Renee notices that the pot roast is all over her couch, on the wall, and everywhere else. What a mess. This place is going to take forever to clean up. Bobby: What the heck happened? Jack: That’s what I would like to know. One minute I was going to
sit down to have pot roast. The next minute, bullets are flying from all directions. I barely had time to get out of the line
of fire. It’s a good thing I’m quick on my feet. D: These guys are professionals. But why target your friend? Myles: Maybe she knows something she isn’t supposed to know. Jack: Maybe. In any case, she is too shaken to tell me anything coherent
at this point. I just want to get her and her daughter out of here. I’m going to take her to my place. Only this time
we use the scenic route just to be sure no one is on my tail. Bobby you follow behind me. Myles and Dimitrius set up decoys.
D: You got it. We’ll ask the neighbors if they heard or saw anything
that might tell us who did this. Myles: Somehow I don’t think the neighbors are going to be accommodating
with information. Bullets tend to scare people off. But it’s worth a try. |
