Epilogue: Jack & Sue's Special Delivery
Dr.
Murphy: Make your wife as comfortable as possible. The delivery will go a lot easier on both of you. Sue’s fully dilated.
I see the crowning of the baby’s head. When I tell you to push, you push as hard as you can, Sue. And remember your
breathing exercises. Ready. Get Set. Push! (smile)
Sue:
Can we stop and finish tomorrow, doctor? I’m too tired to do this. Need to stop. I’m not cut out for this kind
of thing. (nervous smile)
Dr.
Murphy: Break’s over Sue. Count to ten and you’ll be done. Push! This is it. (smile)
Jack:
You’re doing great. You’re the toughest woman I know. Come on, one more time. Push! Sue! Push! (nervous smile)
Sue:
I’m doing all the work here and you’re barking orders at me. (tense smile and rolling eyes at Jack)
Jack:
Sorry. If I could trade places with you, you know I would. Just one more push and we’ll have our baby. (megawatt smile
and his signature wink)
Sue: What do you mean, we? You have the easy part. All you do is wipe the sweat off my forehead
and face. Tell me to repeat my breathing exercises and give me pep talks. (tense smile and rolling eyes at Jack)
Jack: Yeah. You’ve got the tough part alright. You can do it honey. Push one more
time! Come on, Sue. (nervous smile)
Dr.
Murphy: Good job, Sue. Strong heartbeats, the twins are ready to start their new life. Almost there, push once more so I can
turn the shoulders. Congratulations. It’s a boy! Mr. Hudson, would you like to do the honors? (smile)
Jack:
I sure wouldn’t have it any other way. He’s perfect. And he looks just like his mom. (megawatt smile and his signature
wink)
Dr.
Murphy: Okay. The nurse will take care of your son. Sue, break’s over. One more baby coming your way, I need you to
push really hard. Ready. Get Set. Push! Almost there, push once more so I can turn the shoulders. Congratulations. It’s
a girl! Mr. Hudson, time to cut the cord. How about doing the honors? (smile)
Jack: Wow! You bet I would. She’s an angel. And she looks just like her mom. (megawatt
smile and his signature wink)
Sue: I want to see him. I want to see her. I want to hold them both. (glowing smile)
Dr.
Murphy: Good job Sue. You’ll get to hold them both in your arms. The nurse will take you to your maturity room now.
I will bring your twins to you shortly after they get cleaned up for mommy. Get some rest now. (smile)
All the fear faded fast the moment Dr. Murphy
placed first their son and then their daughter in her arms. Sue sat in bed looking down into the beautiful face of her baby
boy and baby girl. Their sweet baby smell drifted to her. They weighed in seven pounds four ounces each little person. Both
are very strong and healthy.
The twins nestled in her arms felt so good even if she was extremely exhausted.
Her heart swelled with sheer joy of the awe-inspiring moment. What a miracle, make that two miracles in one day. Tears filled
his eyes as he looked down at his kids; indescribable feeling came over Jack. His smile was breathtaking and he leaned close
to brush a soft kiss on her mouth.
Jack put his
arm around her and silently counted ten fingers and ten toes gazing at his newborn son. Then he repeated the tally with his
newborn daughter. Sue was getting sleepy so the nurse who came in to check on Sue; put the twins back in their bassinets.
When he finally looked
up, Jack realized the room had been cleared and Dr. Murphy was flipping through the chart.
May 22nd,
2008 precisely 12:01 AM, 12:09 AM was their twins’ birthday.
