Chapter 14: Diamonds & Deception
Late at night in Jack’s guest bedroom Renee calls her friend and told her what happened.
Her friend told Renee to meet another friend at Union Station tomorrow morning at 10 am. She will make the necessary arrangements
to keep Grace safe. Renee hung up the phone and went to play with Grace. She told Grace; tomorrow you are going on a little
trip. But mommy can’t come with you. So you are going to have to be a brave girl for mommy. Mommy’s friend is
going with you on your trip. You are going to stay with another family until mommy can take care of some things and then we
will be together again. Grace starts crying and Renee rocks her in her arms until she falls asleep. She doesn’t want
to let Grace go but she knows that is the only way to keep Grace safe from Simon. And she doesn’t want Grace to see
her when Jack has to arrest her on kidnapping charges. Renee says to herself; “I’m doing what is best for Grace.
For Grace and Charlotte, I will do anything to keep my promise to them”. The next day at the bullpen Lucy: I have some bad news. That was the Italy Embassy; they refuse to hand over the surveillance tapes you
asked for. Jack: Great. Without the surveillance tapes, I don’t
know how we can figure out what Monica Davenport and her boyfriend are really up to. (frustrated expression on his face) Meanwhile, at Union Station, Renee meets Amber and introduces Grace to her. Amber has a puppy dog with her and she lets Grace pet the puppy while she talks with Renee. Amber tells Renee that she is doing the right thing. Grace is going to be just fine. Amber will take Grace to Norwich, Connecticut. She is going to stay with the Parker Family. It’s only until you get things resolved, Renee. Remember the first rule, is always keep the children safe. You know that you can’t have direct contact with Grace. But I will call you when Grace is safe with the Parkers. That’s all I have to tell you.
Call Claire if you need to get out of Back at the bullpen, mid-morning Jack goes to the conference room and sees Renee sitting in the same chair she sat in yesterday. He doesn’t see Grace with her.
Jack: Where is Grace? (raise eyebrows) Renee: Her friend Shelly wanted Grace to spend the night at her house.
I talked to Shelly’s mom and she said it would be alright. So I agreed. I thought it might be good for Grace to play
with her friend. Jack: Okay. Do you have access to the surveillance tapes at the Italy Embassy? (smile) Renee: Yeah. I have security clearance to screen the tapes. Why? Jack: You told me you saw the mystery man holding something glittery in his hand but you couldn’t tell
for sure what that was. I think there might be a clue on the tape if we can take a look at it. (megawatt smile) Renee: Okay. I can get the surveillance tapes for you. It is the least
I can do since I dumped all my problems on you. (smile) Jack: Great. Let’s go now. Then we can have lunch together and discuss your extradition case. (megawatt
smile) Four hours later, back at the bullpen Sue: After looking at the tapes, here’s what I managed to find
out. I heard them talking about stolen diamonds and weapons. Monica mentioned DMX International. That’s all I could get from the tapes. D: The mystery man now has a name. Max Lewis. Jack: Bobby: Do you think Max had something to do with the drive-by shooting
at Renee’s apartment the other night? Jack: I don’t know. He might
have been there. Or he hired someone to go over there and scare Renee. Either way, I want this guy. Bobby, see if you can
get a search warrant. We need to get into Monica’s home and office. (smile) D: Checking out her home is a good idea. Who knows what we might find.
(smile) Myles: It would be lovely if we know where and when the next shipments
of diamonds are coming into the country. (smile) D: Smuggling diamonds is big business. There a lot of companies who
would be interested in the diamond and weapon trade. Jack: Especially terrorist
sleeper cells. I don’t even want to think about the worse case scenario. That’s why we need to catch Max Lewis
or whatever he calls himself in the act of delivering and exchanging stolen diamonds for weapons. (smile)
Jack: And having someone work
closely at the Italy Embassy, someone like Monica Davenport to provide clients for Lewis’s diamond smuggling trade.
Definitely comes in handy. (smile and raise eyebrows) Jack: Well, don’t keep us
in suspense. (megawatt smile) Myles: There’s a twist I never saw coming. Bobby: Are you boys up for a little search and seizure at Monica’s
apartment? (smile) Monica’s Apartment, almost 9 PM Jack: So far we know she is very
messy person, likes to eat Frosty Flakes for breakfast, yogurt, and has a box of ice cream sandwiches in the freezer. (laughs) Bobby: Her closet is ten times worse. Why do women need 50 pairs of
shoes? I’ll never understand. Hang on; I think we may have a winner. There are several documents with Monica’s
signature on it. And notes from her meetings with Max Lewis, how’s that for a buzzer beater. (smile and laughs) D: What do we have here? What is the old saying; diamonds are a girl’s
best friend. (smile) Myles: I hate to interrupt your scavenger hunt, but SOG called to
inform me that Monica is on her way back to her apartment so you guys and Tara had better leave now. Jack: Back at the bullpen
Bobby: Our mission
was a success. (smile)
D: Indeed it was.
I think we should get a diamond specialist to take a look at this diamond to verify if it’s the real thing. (smile)
Lucy: Are you saying
it’s a fake diamond? It certainly looks real to me.
Tara: Actually,
diamond specialist of today can make fake diamonds look exactly like the real thing but it’s really not. It’s
virtually impossible to tell the difference with the naked eye because they are extremely high-quality fakes on the market.
(smile)
Sue: So how can you
tell the difference between a real diamond and a fake one? (smile)
Lucy: Well, it is
every girl’s dream, to grow up and marry a movie star and wear a fancy rock like this one, given to her by her prince.
(smile and laughs)
Myles: This falls
into the category of “more information that I did not need or want to learn” about you three ladies. (laughs)
Bobby: Oh Myles. You
could learn something about the woman psyche that has eluded you thus far. That’s why you have so much woman trouble.
(smile and laughs) Jack: Oh, you know what they say. You can’t teach an old dog new trick. So Myles
I guess you’re out of luck. (megawatt smile and laughs) D: Such stimulating
conversation but I really need to get going. I want to tuck my kids in bed and have a peaceful evening with my wife. Goodnight
everyone. See you tomorrow. Jack: Yeah. It’s time to go home. We can figure out
how to catch Max Lewis with his diamonds trade tomorrow morning. Goodnight all. (megawatt smile) |
