Epilogue: Ready Or Not, Here Comes Baby
Back at the Hudson’s home
Jack: I wouldn’t miss this for the world. We really have to discuss baby names. We have been putting that off
for too long now. (megawatt smile and raise eyebrows)
Sue: Let’s make a list of boys and girls name and pick out the top five for each. That way we can narrow it
down to something we both agree on. (glowing smile)
Jack: Good idea. Let’s get you to bed. You look beat. (megawatt smile)
Four weeks later, Special Delivery at Johnson Memorial Hospital
Jack
came home from a sting operation and wanted to snooze for a little while. Just his luck, his twins had other ideas. Half an
hour later, suddenly Sue wakes up screaming. Levi jumps on Jack and he wakes up immediately. After the shock wore off, he
calls Dr. Murphy. They rush to the hospital and get ready for the birth of their twins.
Sue: Jack, I think my water broke. The babies are coming. Call Dr. Murphy
now. (anxious smile)
Jack: What? Your water broke? You’re
in labor? How far are the contractions? (stunned smile)
Sue: Ah, it sure feels that way. Last checked; five-minute contractions apart.
I’m really scared, Jack. Need hospital now. (anxious smile)
Jack: Okay. Don’t worry, we have a plan. Everything is going to be fine.
I’ve got your suitcase, pillows, and my cell-phone. And I’ve got you. Let’s get you to the hospital. (dazed
smile)
Sue: Hurry, Jack. I don’t think our twins want to wait much longer.
(anxious smile)
Jack has been calm and supportive throughout the whole delivery. He panicked
only once in the car on the way to the hospital when the contractions went from five-minutes to thirty seconds without warning.
The light turned red so he flashed his strobe lights to pass through. This was an emergency after all. They got to the hospital
and met Dr. Murphy in the delivery room. Fetal monitors and an ultrasound already
set up in the delivery room.
Dr. Murphy had an amniocentesis done so she could assess the baby’s
lung development. All the tests have indicated that the twins are ready to make their entrance. Estimated weight clocked in
at over seven pounds each. Jack got into the green scrubs in record time. And helped Sue with her breathing exercises.
Sue grabbed his hand, wrapping her fingers around it firmly, and squeezed
really hard, held on all her might when another contraction the biggest one yet came through. She puffed through so many contractions
he lost count. When Dr. Murphy counted to three, she bore down as hard as she could; pushing with all her strength.
Nerve-racking yet incredible beyond belief, Jack didn’t want to be anywhere
else but right where he was waiting for the moment their babies are welcomed into the world. Dr. Murphy at the foot of the
birthing bed, hands poised and ready to guide their twins into the world. She palmed the infant’s head and the baby
shot forward, already wailing into her waiting hands.
The next moment, the tiny damp baby
squirmed in Dr. Murphy’s hands and the wailing increased ten-fold. After checking the babies making sure each newborn’s
passageways were all clear. Dr. Murphy swaddles the two newborns in their blankets.
It was one minute after midnight when
their twins arrived, first a boy and eight minutes later a girl. Sue did everything perfectly. She was a trouper to the end.
To sum up, Sue was in labor for about 12 hours.
