Chapter
24: Skating Date
At Dove Point Civic Center Ice Arena
The following morning,
Jack wakes up first and calls his friend, Paul to arrange a special treat for Sue. Levi wakes Sue up and after they eat breakfast
with his family. Jack and Sue are on the way to Dove Point Civic Center Ice Arena.
Levi stays at home to play with Tom and Sarah. Outside
the Civic
Center, Jack opens the passenger door for Sue and then he blindfolds
her. Jack and Sue enter the ice skating rink. Jack knows how much Sue enjoys ice skating and just for today; she gets to show
him her prowess on the ice. They rent two pairs of figure skates. Sue starts out gradually just skating around the rink twice
to get into the groove. Before long, Sue demonstrates that she is still proficient on the ice.
Sue: Why are you blindfolding me? (curious smile)
Jack: Trust me. You are going to love this. (megawatt smile)
Sue: You want to watch me ice skate. But nobody else is here. (lighthearted
smile)
Jack: We have the whole place to ourselves for three hours today. Come
on champion you better get on the ice and show me how good you are. (megawatt
smile)
Sue: I’m not sure. I
mean, I am a little rusty at this, considering I haven’t skated for a long time. I hope I don’t fall down. (lighthearted
smile)
Jack: I’m sure once you start skating around the rink, it will come
back to you. I’ve heard that it’s just like riding a bicycle. Once you learn how to ride, it’s something
you never forget. (megawatt smile)
Sue: Easy for you to say. You play hockey more often than I skate. Just
remember to catch me before I fall down on the ice. If you don’t, mister, you are going to be in so much trouble with
me. (lighthearted smile and laughs)
Jack: I wouldn’t mind getting in trouble with you. Stop stalling
and start skating Thomas. (megawatt smile and his signature wink)
As Jack cheers her on, Sue skates
around the rink remembering all the years of ice skating lessons she took as a child and as she skates she remembers fondly
her best friend, Judy Clark. Sue is in her element as she performs the familiar routine and turns around to smile at Jack. Another
hour goes by; Jack skates next to her and links her hands with his.
They
skate across the rink together laughing and having a good time. Now, Jack stops in the center of the rink. Mesmerized by the
promise in his eyes, by the heat of his touch, Sue lets him draw her close. He held her left hand with his right, his left
arm at her waist pressing her body against his. He then positions his right hand slightly on her small back. Their hands are
joined and held below shoulder level. He gently tucks her head beneath his chin.
As they
begin to dance on the ice, he encircles his arms around her. Jack leads Sue to turn right with a gentle push with his right
hand on her back. Sue makes a full sweeping turn to her left, with her right arm drawn across the midline of her body, forming
a loop because of their joined hands. Together their movements on ice are fluid and graceful.
As they
dance on the ice, the song; “Feels Like Forever” by Joe Cocker is played over the loudspeaker.
It goes like this: I saw you/ That was all I had to see/ Wanted you/ Had to have you next to me/ From that moment/ I knew that
you'd be all I'd ever need/And there's a place inside my heart/ Nobody's touched before/ And when I found you/ I found all
that I'd been searching for/You turned my world around/ Chorus: All I know/ Is
that it feels like forever/ All I know/ Yes I love the way it feels /All I see/ Is how good we are together/ And I never wanna
see it slip away/ I'll never let you go/ Is all I know/ Hold me/ Love is here for us to make/ Stay with me/ Let's put our
hearts in the hands of fate/ Time will tell us/ If what we've got was worth the wait/ And
there's a fire that's been burning deep inside of me/And I don't need nobody else/ 'Cause now you're here with me/ You've
turned my world around/ 2nd Chorus Repeat: All I know/ Is that it
feels like forever/ All I know/ Is I love the way it feels/All I see/ Is how good we are together/ And I never want to see
it slip away/ I'll never let you go/ Is all I know/ I might have never met you/ At another time or place/ Now I never could
forget you/ I could never walk away/ That's all I know/ 'Cause there's a place
inside my heart/ Nobody's touched before/ And when I found you/I found all that
I'd been searching for/ You've turned my world around/Repeat Chorus 2x/ It's all I know/ Is it feels like forever/ All I know/
Is I love the way it feels/All I see/ Is how good we are together
Before they leave the Dove Center, Sue kisses Jack
for being so considerate. They went to lunch. Afterwards Jack gives Sue the grand tour of his hometown.
Sue:
Thank you for arranging this, just the two of us alone in the skating rink. You sure do come up with the best ideas. (exuberant
smile)
Jack:
I do my best to keep you happy. When you smile at me that way, I want to give you everything that you deserve and more. (megawatt
smile and his signature wink)
Sue:
But I already have the best of everything. I have you in my life, that’s all I ever want. (exuberant smile)
Jack: I don’t know about you, but all that skating made me hungry.
(megawatt smile and laughs)
Sue:
Me too. Where are we going to eat lunch? (exuberant smile)
Jack: I’m taking you to
The Shannon. They make the best
burgers in town. (megawatt smile)
