Chapter 5: Someone’s Daughter
Sue: I got a page from Howie. He
has information for us. Jack: Alright Howie. What can you
tell us? Howie: That girl you’ve been
looking for. Her name is Candice Byrne. She went into the diner across the street. Jack: Candice Byrne? We would like
to talk to you. Candice: Who wants to know? You
again, I told you to leave me alone. Jack: It’s okay. He’s
with us. Tell us what you know and we can get you off the streets. Sue: Please Candice. We just want
to help you. We know that you are in trouble. Where’s your family? Candice: Don’t have a family.
That’s cool. Don’t like anyone telling me what to do anyhow. And I don’t need your help. Especially, not
cops anyway. Sue: We’re with the FBI. We
want to catch the man who is behind this so-called business. But we need your cooperation. Do you understand what I’m
saying? Candice: Guess so. What do you need
from me? Jack: You eat first then we’ll
talk. Signing to Sue- I’m going to call Diane. Keep an eye on her. (smile) Sue: How old are you? Why aren’t
you in school? Candice: What do you care? I hate
school. All the kids make fun of me because of the way I dress and talk. Sue: I’m sorry to hear that.
But not all kids are mean. I’ve had the same problem in high school. Candice: I don’t believe that.
You are so pretty. And your boyfriend sure looks cute. (smile) Sue: Thanks. You are very pretty
girl. By the way, Jack is my partner. And I’m deaf. This is my hearing dog, Levi. I remember the kids in my high school,
some were mean to me, but I also made a few friends too. Jack: You want to order anything
else to eat before we go? (smile) Candice: Where are you going to
take me? Jack: Back to my office. We can
talk without being interrupted. (smile) In the conference room Diane: Hi Candice. I’m glad
to finally meet you. I’m Detective Diane Groves from Metro PD. I think you are on the videotape that was shot inside
King Cobra Nightclub.
I need you to take a look at the tape and tell me what you remember from that night. Candice: I don’t know what
you’re talking about. I wouldn’t take my clothes off for the camera
or anyone else in the room for that matter. Jack: We know this is hard. But
you have got to tell us what you know. It’s him we want. Candice: You don’t know these
guys. They are ruthless and evil. They made me do really bad things. Jack: That’s why we need your
help to put them out of business for good. I know you can help us. Trust me. I promise to keep you safe. (smile) Candice: Okay. Yes. I’m the
girl on the videotape. It was shot in the basement of the nightclub. “Viper” likes to watch. He made me make the
video. Said it would make me famous on the internet. I was stupid enough to believe him. I’m a bad girl. Diane: You’re not a bad girl.
The only person who is to blame for this is “Viper”. And believe we are going to get him. I won’t rest until
he is behind bars where he belongs. Jack: You know “Viper”?
Can you describe what he looks like? Candice: If I tell you about “Viper”
and he finds out, he will kill me. Jack:
I won’t let anything happen to you. You have my word. Listen to me; you’re the only one who can identify “Viper”.
Once you give me his description, I will hunt him down and arrest him. (reassuring smile) Candice: Okay. He’s in his
mid-20s, tall, dark hair, brown eyes, broad shoulders, and he had on a dark suit. He also had a tattoo of a cobra snake on
his left shoulder. Jack:
Thanks, Candice. You’ve been a big help. (reassuring smile) Candice: Yeah. So can I go now?
Diane: Why don’t you come
with me? I think I have some clothes that could fit you. You can stay with me. Jack:
What are you doing, Diane? (raise eyebrows) Diane: What do you say, Candice?
Candice: I don’t know. I wouldn’t
want to impose like that. Diane: You’re not imposing.
It would be good for me. I would have someone to talk to besides my plants. Candice: Well if it’s cool
with you. I guess I could stay one night. Diane: Good. I’m glad we worked
that out. I need to go over a few details with Jack and then we can leave. Jack:
You can’t let her stay at your place. It’s too dangerous. Diane: What are you talking about?
You forget that I’m a detective with Metro PD and I know how to shoot a gun. And I go to the firing range every week
to practice. I’ll be fine. Look at this way; I can keep an eye on Candice. I won’t let her out of my sight. (smile) Jack:
Fine. But tell me why this case is so important to you? (smile) Diane: Look at her. She is still
a baby. She is also someone’s daughter. I think she ran away from home. But she won’t talk about her family. (smile) Jack:
That girl should be at a safe house or at the very least a shelter for teens. I can set that up right away. (smile) Diane: No. She is starting to trust
us. She won’t if we send her to a shelter or a safe house guarded by strangers. I am perfectly capable of taking care
of myself. But thanks for your concern. (smile) Jack:
I can’t talk you out of this. Okay. She can stay with you, but I want you to call me if there’s any trouble, day
or night. An agent will accompany you both back to your place. This is not up for debate. It would make me feel a lot better.
(concern smile) Diane: Sure
thing, Jack. We both need a good night rest. Goodnight, Jack. See you tomorrow. (smile) Jack: Yeah. Tomorrow we can formulate our sting to catch “Viper”. Goodnight, Diane. See you in the morning.
